Lifecycle CO₂ Reductions
According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), petroleum gasoline releases on average 21.3 pounds of CO₂ per gallon, while petroleum diesel fuel releases 28.75 pounds of CO₂ for each gallon used. California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) outlines the carbon reduced through the use of renewable fuels:
- Flex Fuel E85 reduces 7.4 lbs of CO₂ per gallon
- Diesel HPR reduces 18.6 lbs per gallon

Gallons of Oil Reduced
This is a measurement of the gallons of petroleum displaced by using renewable fuels such as Flex Fuel E85 or Diesel HPR.
- 1 gallon of Flex Fuel E85 reduces 0.85 gallons of petroleum crude.
- 1 gallon of Diesel HPR reduces 0.99 gallons of petroleum crude.
Barrels of Petroleum Displaced
This is a measurement of the barrels of petroleum displaced by using renewable fuels. One barrel of oil equals 42 gallons of automotive fuel and every gallon of renewable fuels you choose displaces petroleum.
- 1 gallon of Flex Fuel E85 reduces 0.85 gallons of petroleum crude.
- 1 gallon of Diesel HPR reduces 0.99 gallons of petroleum crude.
Grams of Fine Particulate Matter (PM 2.5) Reduced
According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, Diesel HPR reduces PM tailpipe emissions by 28% compared to petroleum diesel. According to the Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Lab, Flex Fuel E85 reduces PM 2.5 tailpipe emissions by 34% when compared to gasoline.
- Flex Fuel E85 reduces PM tailpipe emissions by .034 grams per gallon
- Diesel HPR reduces PM tailpipe emissions by .390 grams per gallon
Grams of Carbon Monoxide (CO) Reduced
According to the California Environmental Protection Agency, R99 reduces CO tailpipe emissions by 33% compared to petroleum diesel. According to the Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Lab, Flex Fuel E85 reduces CO tailpipe emissions by 20% when compared to gasoline.
- Flex Fuel E85 reduces CO tailpipe emissions by 45.269 grams per gallon
- Diesel HPR reduces CO tailpipe emissions by 4.231 grams per gallon
Equivalent Impact of Planted Trees
A healthy tree stores on average 13 pounds of carbon annually. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Federal Renewable Fuel Standard, petroleum gasoline releases on average 21.3 pounds of CO₂ per gallon burned, while petroleum diesel fuel releases 28.75 pounds of CO₂ for each gallon used. the carbon reduced through the use of renewable fuels including:
- Flex Fuel E85 reduces 7.4 lbs of CO₂ per gallon.
- Diesel HPR reduces 18.6 lbs per gallon.
For example, the use of two gallons of Flex Fuel E85 (instead of petroleum gasoline) reduces emissions of CO₂ by about the same amount sequestered by 1 tree over one year.
